Core values are formed in our childhood by the people who raised and influenced us, our community, our early experiences that shaped us.
In our Jyotisha chart, core values are associated mostly in the 2nd house, along with the way we speak (or don't), our income, and more. It is the foundation the rest of our life is set upon.
I've noticed that throughout my life, I will encounter new experiences and people that challenge and refine my values and now that Jupiter has been transiting my 2nd house of my birth chart, 2023 has been a year of clarifying and smoothing out the blemishes in my value system.
By blemishes, I mean that values, like everything else, gets shadowed and repressed at different times of our life and we don’t have clarity on what we stand for. Then an experience comes along and asks us to get clear.
I think we all go through times of life that ask us to become more clear and precise, to take a step up so we can see further with a wider lens.
I'm offering up this value practice for you. Especially if you are taking the September Ayurveda course or the Reveal Light Course starting in October, clarifying 1) where you are currently (point A) and 2) where you want to go (point B) are a foundational piece to self-study.
Think of it like taking a trip to a place you haven't been yet. There is a desire for a new experience. But to get there, you need to map it out. You cannot just arrive at this new destination without taking into account where in the world you are in this moment. On Google Maps, you share your location first, Point A… and then list Point B. And voila, a roadmap appears.
I invite you to spend time reflecting on your current Point A and Point B.
Inquiries to become more clear on what you value:
Consider past values and also how life (people and experiences) have shaped and smoothed out your values.
Consider other people’s unique values based on how their upbringing was.
What is trying to be expressed from your values but goes sideways? How about in what you observe with others? How might someone who opposes your political views be expressing their values? How about you?
The Practice:
Listen (hit play at the top of this blog post) to this list of 250+ attributes and notice in your body when these read attributes resonate and then circle them or write them down on a piece of paper.
Organize your chosen values or attributes into smaller groups (make no more than 5 sub-groups).
From those smaller groups, select one attribute that encapsulates the whole of the group as a value. You may choose another word or your own word that works better.
Reflect on your list of 3-5 values.
