You may have noticed, I’ve begun my hibernation…I always do this time of year. I once thought it was from the over-partying that began at Halloween and by mid-December, I was exhausted. Now that I have Vedic astrology as my guide to understand nature and rhythms, I understand it more from the perspective of Mula Nakshatra.
Mula nakshatra means, “the rooted one, she who goes to the source, she who abides by the source” and it is the foundational star. For transformation and evolution to happen, we have to go dark so that we can emerge into light and be renewed and rejuvenated by light.
On December 16th through the 29th December) the Sun is traipsing through Mula. Mula is in the portion of the cosmic body where the black hole is (7 degrees). Mercury travelled through Mula to the next set of stars, went into retrograde and now is going back through Mula through it’s retrograde (before headed through again), and Mars is preparing to go through Mula late next week.
Why is this important?
Whenever we have planets, especially fiery planets like the Sun and Mars, going through three specific points in the Zodiac, they are working on untying karmic knots. We can best understand this by seeing what is happening on our Earth.
Especially with Jyeshtha-Mula, but also in the area of Revati-Ashwini and Ashlesha-Magha, when planets are transiting through these Water to Fire signs, on Earth, we see very strange weather patterns: Volcanos, earthquakes, blizzards, tornadoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, etc. They are happening now in big and small ways. For instance, we have a crazy mini snowy/sleet/hail type blizzard yesterday here in Huntington that lasted about 45 minutes. It was crazy! People couldn’t get up our hill. And in Iceland, a volcano erupted - listen volcanos in the ocean or near the ocean are near exact copies of Mula nakshatra energy when it is at it’s fierce expression.
As above, so below. As without, so within.
What this means is that we will see the same things happening in our inner landscape or in the inner world of those you love and care for. This is a tough time of year for some people. Then others, like me, have the expression of Wintering or Hibernation.
These energies are on a continuum and how they express are going to be dependent on the karma you are working through as a Soul.
As Mars makes its way through this gauntlet, this is likely to bring even more strength to the energy. I’m not the type of astrologer who makes predictions, but I do like to make meaning out of challenging situations so we can rest more as awareness of the physics of the Earth realm, vs. being a victim or victor of circumstance. So I’ll be back in a few weeks to dissect the Mars journey.
In late 2019 through early 2020, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Ketu, Mercury, Moon and Sun all went through this portion of the Zodiac awakening collective karma that we now call a pandemic. Saturn had started this journey early in 2019 and Ketu continued it through 2020, but sandwiched in between was a series of activations as these planets went through the gandanta of Jyeshtha and Mula.
What can we do? Be aware and allow yourself to co-participate with the difficulties you witness, vs. getting stuck in it.
Be Kind. Everyone is going through something to some degree and many are so contracted that they cannot see this in themselves.
I saw this post today on Facebook which made me want to write about Ardra nakshatra, which is in the exact opposite position of Mula.
If you think of our lives as an egg (albeit a cosmic egg)… an egg contains the whole. Everything an egg needs to survive is contained within itself to become a bird and fly into the heavens. It contains the nourishment that feeds it as it transforms and grows, and as it grows it becomes stronger and has a more abled-body to break out of the shell and emerge as it’s own autonomous being. Some birds still need assistance and fed, but chicks can start pecking away although it is better if they have a mother, and care and community.
We can think of Mula and Ardra in this way. Mula is in search of foundational truth and Ardra is the ability to master any storm. It brings the power to feel and act. To ideally walk with grace through these transformative times.
On December 26th, the Moon is Full in Ardra (with the Sun in Mula), the last Full Moon of 2023. You might be able to piece together what this means for your life as you become familiar with your personal astrology.
So… to my Mula and Ardra compadres, I bow to you as we, together, fight our way through with grace.
(The only way out is through.)
If you have a planet with Mula or Ardra (or your Ascendant), pop a note in the comments and let me know how things are playing out with you right now.
Wishing you all blessings for peace, ease and joy - in whatever dose you can muster, through these holidays. Sending love…
Jenn
